On April 26th, 1884, a tornado was spotted going through Garnett & nearby Central City. During the disaster, Adams was working outside on his fruit farm when he saw it a few miles away. He then had an idea & immediately put it into action: he went back into his house to grab his bulky studio camera, went towards the Garnett United Presbyterian Church, set his system there & photographed the twister, making him the first person to ever photograph a tornado.

Ironically, not only was his previous occupation being a studio photographer (in which he operated in Lawrence, KS from 1857 till 1867, when he had sold his business & moved to Garnett), but a few months later on August 28th, a tornado that had touched down in Howard, Dakota Territory (modern-day South Dakota) was photographed by F. N. Robinson, which as a result of its popularity in newspaper circulations, eclipsed the existence of Adam's photograph for decades till local weather maps in 1884 & a local news article from 1907 debunked & confirmed Adam's claim to fame.
