Richard 'Dick' Barnes

UNADILLA Richard "Dick" Barnes, 59, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at the Albany Medical Center, Albany.

Dick was born April 30, 1946, in Sidney, the son of Clinton and Hattie Barnes.

He married Susan Browning on June 10, 1967, and was inducted into the United States Army three days later. He served a tour of combat duty in Vietnam as a platoon sergeant with the 11th Infantry Brigade, earning the Bronze Star for Valor. Upon returning home, Dick had several careers, including Superintendent of Public Works for the Village of Unadilla and owning his own plumbing, heating and electrical business. Most recently, he was employed as Director of Weatherization for Opportunities for Delaware County, a position in which he oversaw the expansion of the Weatherization program, as well as construction of the new company headquarters.

Dick served his community through his work with many organizations, including the Unadilla Fire Department and Emergency Squad.

He graduated with the first class of Otsego County EMTs and served for many years as fire chief. He was also one of the founders of the Unadilla Explorer Post No. 11.

In 1989, he received the Gary Goodier Service Award for Community Service. Dick also worked for many years with Boy Scout Troop No. 1. He also currently was serving on the Sidney Town Board as Deputy Supervisor.

Dick's greatest love in life was his family and will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, of Unadilla; and two sons and their wives, Rick and Alison Barnes of Unadilla and Chad and Jennifer Barnes of Unadilla. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Barnes and close friend, Warren Sutton, of Krumville; half sister, Vera Kilmier of Delhi; and half brother, Terry in North Carolina; his stepmother, Lena of Delhi; and three grandchildren, Don, Sean and Nicole. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, Ron.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2006, at the Unadilla United Methodist Church, Main Street, Unadilla, with the Rev. Kip Stratton officiating.

Interment in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, will be held at a later date.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 18, 2006, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of I-88), when the family will be present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Dick's name to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the supervision of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.
