Douglas "Mac" Buford McPhail, 71, of 3454 Albomarle Road died Saturday, at Hinds Gereral Hospital after an extended illness.
He was preceded in death by his wife Minnie Mae Lofton McPhail(7-12-1912 to 4-10-1961), married on 10-2-1932 in Rankin Co. Miss. and only child Norma Jean McPhail(9-7-1933 to 8-30-1952 both, buried beside him. His parents, Major Robert McPhail and Letha Seneth Polk McPhail, both, buried in Prentiss, Miss. and an older brother, Robert Guyles McPhail of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He is survived by a nephew, Robert W. McPhail, Sr. of Mendenhall, Miss. and 2nd wife caretaker Bessie W. Lambert McPhail R.N.,born 3-29-1904, married on 11-7-1975 in Hinds Co. She is the daughter of C.J. Lambert and Beaulah Stringer of Lawrence Co. Miss., both deceased.
Douglas was a native of Prentiss but was a longtime resident in the Jackson area. He was a Baptist and a former employee of Mills-Morris Automotive, former manager of the Alamo Plaza Motel on the southeast corner of Terry Road and Hwy. 80, and a retired salesman and serviceman with M & N Industrial Equipment Steam Cleaners.
He was a rifle marksman in the U.S. Army and honorably discharged on July 30, 1931 from an immune reaction from the smallpox vaccine, Ser# 6378061 Private Troop E 12th Cavalry.
To his three and four year old great nephews, before they could talk, he was "Uncle Duck", instead of Uncle Douglas.
