On Friday, 30 September 2011, George Walter Abbott, 58, passed away of liver cancer in Sonora, California.
He was born on Thursday, 02 July 1953 in Saint Paul, Minnesota and was the son George W. Abbott Jr., and Patricia M. Abbott.
George attended schools in Minnesota and Montana and graduated from high school in 1971.
He enlisted in the United States Navy and over the next 20 years, he became an aviation electronics technician, earning his Air Warfare Specialist wings, and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters in several fighter squadrons.
George served aboard many aircraft carriers, including the Eisenhower, Forrestal, Kennedy and the final cruise on the Ranger, in Desert Storm.
He met his wife, Nancy, while in port at Nassau, the Bahamas, in 1985, and married in Virginia Beach, Va., in 1986.
George was later stationed with VF-1 fighter squadron at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego and it was there that he worked at Fighter Town, which was used as a set for the 1986 movie, "Top Gun."
He was then sent to Avionics Calibration School at North Island Naval Air Station, also in the San Diego area, where he was assigned to run its calibration lab, then attended instructor's school. He later taught and co-directed the calibration school.
During this time, he earned his bachelor of science degree in aviation management from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He also held airframe and powerplant mechanic and private pilot's licenses from the Federal Aviation Administration, and was an Environmental Protection Agency-certified refrigerant technician.
After retiring from the Navy in 1995, as a chief petty officer, he worked seven years for IBM and Compaq Computer Corp., in the Silicon Valley as an electronics manager.
In 2002, Mr. Abbott and his family moved to Pine Mountain Lake, where he worked for several years as a substitute and independent study teacher for Groveland schools, and as a handyman, running his own home maintenance business. In 2005, he and family moved to Sonora, Calif.
George was a member of Pine Mountain Lake Aviation Association, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and an active member of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 391 Motorcycle Riders.
Mr. Abbott is survived by his wife of 25 years, Nancy A. Abbott, son, Josh Abbott, daughter, Justine Abbott, brother, Lee Abbott, sisters, Annette (Abbott) Glidden, Kathy (Abbott )Wettstein and Rita (Abbott) Krog.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. Abbott Jr., and Patricia M. Abbott of Moorhead, Minn.
