Martha "Amy" Savannah was the daughter of Charles Franklin and America Clemetine Guinn Ford. She was 5th of 14 children and raised in Milam County, Texas. Her siblings were William Lafayette, Charlotte Jane "Jenny", Evelyn "Eve" Cordui, Mary Caldona "Cal", Nancy "Nan" Thatcher, James Thomas "Tom", Charles Bostian "Boss", Elena Bell "Kenny" and Gano Eads Ford.

In 1898 Amy married Kenneth "Mack" Avant. In 1900, Kenneth and Amy had a son, Asa Franklin Avant. In 1903, Kenneth died and Amy later married Roy Sample and they had no children together.

Amy's son Asa, married Eva Howle and had three children: Evelyn Ruth, Asa, Jr., and Melton Avant.
