NOTE: The following is an excerpt from, AMOS BUSH AND SONS MOVE TO PARMER COUNTY, TEXAS, by Myrtle (Storey) Jones Kindred
...In 1870, Amos was farming in Cedar County, Nebraska, and continued to farm there until 1874. Here he married Orpha Mae Pratt in March 1873 and their two sons, Willie Pratt and Frederick Elmer were born to them. In 1877, they were in the Black Hills of South Dakota and in 1880 they were back in Poweshiek County, Iowa. So as you can see, Amos liked to see new country. Orpha Mae was getting fed up with Amos's itchy feet and all that moving around, and filed for divorce in February 1888 claiming he was causing her a lot of emotional grief and accusing her of adultery with a man named Harland. Amos also accused her of adultery with his brother, William, and told the neighbors of this and causing her much disgrace. The divorce was granted. William and Orpha Mae must have caught the first train out of Montezuma, Iowa, because they were married in Cedar County on May 1, 1888. The farm was sold at a sheriff's sale the 23rd of June 1888. William and Orpha Mae did not stay in Nebraska, but later went to Jackson County, Oregon, where they adopted a little girl and later moved to California and settled. Orpha Mae's children grew up and Willie became a dentist, and Frederick stayed in Modoc County, California, and became a banker...
Nov. 19, 2013 ~ Interview with Orpha's granddaughter, Verna Marie (Bush) Ackenheil Roskie, who is currently living with her son and daughter-in-law in Northern California. Verna, age 91, is the only living child of William Pratt Bush, and states Orpha was living with her family at the time of her death in 1927. She states Orpha died in the family's home at 1414 Milvia Avenue in Berkeley, Alameda, California. She remembers visiting the cemetery with her father, William Pratt Bush, and viewing Orpha's wall-plaque where her cremated remains are interred. She recalls her grandmother as a "sweet gentle little lady" and says the last thing she remembers Grandma Orpha saying to her was - "When you are old and cannot see, put on some specs and think of me." Well, Verna remembered her today by doing just that.
