William A. Abele, M.D. died on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, in Boonville.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 29, at First Christian Church, 301 Fourth St. in Boonville. The family will greet friends at the church immediately after the service.
Bill was born on March 14, 1924, to Emil F. and Emma Sauer Abele in Detroit.
The family moved to Boonville when the Rev. Abele became pastor of Boonville Evangelical and Reformed Church, which is now United Church of Christ.
Bill attended Central Methodist College in Fayette and in 1947 graduated from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He took his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn. Bill was stationed in Japan as chief of the Army medical dispensary in Tokyo. He later was chief of medicine at Fort Devon, Mass. After completing military service, Bill returned to Boonville, where for 35 years he provided skilled and compassionate medical care to countless patients. He also served as an adjunct faculty member of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine.
Bill was dedicated to the Boonville community. He served on the board of the Boonville School District and as chairman of the boards of the Kemper Military School and First Christian Church. He was a longtime member of the board of UMB Bank in Boonville. After retiring from his medical practice, he served 12 years on the Boonville City Council and also served as mayor pro tem.
For Bill, however, his most significant achievement was his marriage to Joyce Gowan in 1945. Bill and Joyce shared more than 61 years until her recent death on March 10, 2007.
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his remarkable life are his children, Douglas and wife Mary Pat of Boonville, Bruce and wife Marta of Dubuque, Iowa, Christopher of Kansas City and Andrew and wife Patty of Ballwin; and his grandchildren, Ashley and husband Luke Rhode of Boonville, Adam of Chicago, Elizabeth of Dallas and Alexandra of Ballwin.
His brother, Donald, preceded him in death.
Contributions in Bill's memory may be made to First Christian Church Memorial Garden, 301 Fourth St., Boonville, Mo., 65233; or to the Boonslick Heartland YMCA, 757 Third St., Boonville, Mo., 65233.
