Memories of Johnnie Pollock
Johnnie Pollock was actually named Vincent J. Bugajczyk, but no one could pronounce his last name. He was from Poland, so he became Johnnie Pollock to the folks in Iowa Hill, Placer Co., California, where I grew up.
Since the Czech and Polish languages are similar, my grandfather Frank Yonash and Johnnie Pollock used to try to chat with each other to ease the pain of being separated from their home countries and families.
Johnnie loved kids and whenever he saw one of us he would come over to shake hands – inevitably, there was a quarter in his palm for the kid to have.
Johnnie Pollock had an old Model T coupe (or maybe an A – I never could tell the difference). The folks in Iowa Hill were always playing tricks on each other. One day someone painted "half fast" on the back of Johnnie Pollock's Model T, which of course was a play on words and hilarious to everyone, including Johnnie.
One of his favorite sayings was "Holy smoke" and this is engraved on his headstone.
