Alma, Neb. Oct. 20. (AP)- Funeral services are expected to be held Wednesday for C. E. Alter, 64, Alma lumber dealer, and a leader in business and political circles. Alter died Saturday night in an Omaha hospital. Survivors include his widow, a son, Joseph Alter of Oakland, Calif., and two daughters, Mrs. Everett Hunt of Lincoln and Mrs. Robert Scott of Ogallala. His mother, Mrs. Joe Alter, sr., of Lincoln, also survives.
Born in Mt. Pleasant, Ia., Alter attended schools in Alma and in 1904 received a law degree from the University of Nebraska. Shortly after graduation he entered the lumber business with his father and remained in that business until his death. He was a past president of the Nebraska Lumber Merchants association and the South Platte United Chamber of Commerce and was a former state director of the Nebraska Reclamation association. Active in Republican political circles, he served as county chairman, was a delegate to the 1936 national convention and in 1940 was unsuccessful candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. He also served as mayor of Alma, president of the city council and a member of the board of education.
