She was born March 7, 1877 in New Haven Township. Macomb County, Michigan to parents John Christian Sartor and Emiline Jane Sellers. She was the youngest of four children. She was the only girl.

At the age of 21, she married Jesse Seth Hanford. They were married on September 3, 1898 at the office of Gratiot County (Michigan) Clerk by W. A. Furman, Justice of the Peace. Jesse was 28 years old at the time. The marriage was witnessed by Myra Lewis and E.S. Furman, both of Gratiot County, Michigan. Prior to getting married, Jesse lived in Arcada Twp, Michigan, while Emma had lived in Newark, Michigan.

Jesse and Emma began their family on a farm in Pine River Township, Gratiot County, Michigan. In 1900, while Jesse farmed the land for a living, Emma raised their infant daughter, Edna with the help of a 14 year old servant by the name of Mary Burge.

By 1910, Jesse and Emma had moved their growing family to a rented house on a farm in Arcada Township, Gratiot County, Michigan. This is where the family remained until at least 1920. Also, Emma's mother, Emeline lived with them at the time, as did their son-in-law and daughter, John H. and Edna B. Peska.

In 1922, Jesse & Emma moved the family to the Robinhood farm which was situated near Alma in Arcadaa Twp., Gratiot, Michigan. Emma became a widow, when Jesse died accidentally in 1936.

In the Spring of 1930, Jesse and Emma owned a farm house in Arcada Township, Gratiot County, Michigan. Her mother, Emeline continued to lived with them, as did her son, daughter-in-law, Guy and Fern Hanford and granddaughter, Marjore Hanford. Eventhough, radios where becoming more popular, they did not own one at the time.

In 1951, the Alma Rural Directory section of the Polk's City Directory stated Emma lived on Rural Road #2, or now known as Winans Road.

The Robinson's 1961 Gratiot County, Michigan Rural Directory stated Emma lived at 2651 N. Winans Rd, Arcada Township, Alma, Michigan and that she owned a telephone.

A Platbook of Gratiot County from 1963, showed Emma owned 40 acres in section 19 on Winans Rd. This was 40 of the original 60 acres Jesse owned dating back to at least 1936.

She died on March 27, 1967 of Heart and Kidney Failure in Alma, Gratiot County, Michigan. She is interred at Riverside Cemetery in Alma, Gratiot County, Michigan. Riverside Cemetery is located on Arcada Road in Arcada Township, Alma, Michigan.

It is wondered how the name ‘Robinhood' farm was derived. I personally believe it was originated from the mind of Millie, as the following was found in her journal from 1929-1930:

"My books all stand in a quite row as still as a mouse, and I who knows what is happening in them there, keep lentening and wondering why They do not burst and there leaves fly out, and the room befilled with noise. There is so much chatter & laughter & din, There is so many girls & boys (2 verse),
There's tiny Tim & Robinhood & There's Alice in Wonderland There Ozma of Oz and a pirate bold & a hook instead of a hand. And so many others, I often think what fun it would be to see them jump from the book and climb from the shelf right in to the chair with me."
