James Howard Roach was born in Avon, IL - the fifth child of William and Mary Roy Roach, who were both Irish immigrants. He married Henrietta (Hattie) Martin in Kahoka, MO on Jan. 30, 1883. They raised three children: Roy George, John Henry and Henrietta Catherine "Vivian" (Wallworth).
James and his family moved to Keokuk, IA in 1894, where he ran a livery stable, engaged in a real estate and insurance business and served as the County Recorder for Lee County. In 1910 he moved to Blessing, TX where he continued in the real estate and insurance business and served as a Representative in the Texas State Legislature from 1913 - 1916. In later life, he and his wife moved to Stuttgart, AR where they lived with their daughter and her family.
