Early settlers of Spanish Grove were Edwards, Thompson, Butler, Jimmy Jones, James & Thomas McAuley and Jusha Butler.
The school was established in 1879. It consisted of a one room log housewith a stick - and-dirt chimney for the large fireplace which provided the heat, one window with wooden shutters and seats made from split logs.
Son of John E. Ashby and wife Mary Glosson, grandson of George G. and Elizabeth Ashby, great-grandson of Joshua Ashby and Rachel Patterson Ashby who came from Wilson County, TN to settle in Carroll County before the Civil War.
