James Raymond Chapman grew up in Illinois, where he was married to Clara Inice Hart on July 14 1872 at Sycamore in De Kalb Co. To this union were born nine children: Julia, Minnie, Alice, Avery, Clara, Nellie, Daisy, Richard and Paul. He was a farmer, painter and day laborer and the family moved many times - from Illinois to Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and finally to Oklahoma.
After the death of his wife, Clara, at Claremore, Rogers County, OK, he moved to Custer County, OK, where he lived first with his son, Paul, and later with his daughter, Nellie, and her husband, Emerson Dunn. He passed from this life at their home east of Stafford and was buried at the Arapaho City Cemetery. His wife was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Claremore, Rogers County, OK. He was a member of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his children, Avery, Nellie, Richard and Paul, as well as many grandchildren and several half-brothers and sisters.
