David S. Clossen (age 35) and his wife, Pamela S. Clossen (age 32) were killed on Sunday, May 18, 1980 in a traffic accident that occurred along southbound I-5 near the Coweeman River Bridge (near Kelso WA) from traffic conditions that were affected by the eruption of Mt. St. Helens.
According to a news article that appeared in the Monday, May 19, 1980 edition of the Longview Daily News (pg B2), a truck-trailer rig slammed into three cars after one had stalled resulting in a chain-reaction accident. The Clossons were killed in the accident when their car burst into flames.
Although not included among the official death toll for the 57 listed victims of Mt. St. Helens, the Clossons were killed in circumstances involving the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens and so became victims of that fateful day nonetheless. According to Washington State Police troopers, traffic conditions were affected by a number of panicked motorists fleeing the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in this area.
