Anderson, Dr. Howard J. 70 11/02/1940 03/04/2011 Howard died of a massive heart attack while launching his boat at the Milwaukie boat ramp to go fishing. It was the way he always said he'd wish to go. He was born in Los Angeles to John and Alice Anderson, the first of their two children. At age 19, while a freshman at Stanford University, Howard was diagnosed with type I diabetes, and like all things in his life, he continued with his plans, graduating in 1962. His medical training included: the University of California Los Angeles; Virginia Mason, Seattle 1966-67; and UCLA for a three-year residency in dermatology, 1970. He knew from experience that he would find more fishing and less sun in the Northwest than in L.A. While searching for a place to practice, he came to a small town south of Portland that did not have a dermatologist, but it did have a river running through. He set up a private practice on Washington Street in Milwaukie and remained there until his retirement 34 years later in 2004. Dr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Glenda French; his daughters from his first marriage, Susan Anderson and Kristin Viles; stepdaughters, Julia French, Medora Cesarano and Maria Buschbach; sister, Jean Duffy of Anaheim, Calif.; and a total of 14 grandchildren. A memorial will be at 2 p.m Sunday, March 27, 2011, in Milwaukie Presbyterian Church, 2416 S.E. Lake Road, Milwaukie. Milwaukie Rotary has set up a Howard J. Anderson Memorial Fund to provide assistance to our local and world community. Contributions may be sent to P.O. Box 22194, Milwaukie, OR 97269-2194.
