Lena Maria "Lena" Pettit was born in Waxahachie, Ellis Co., TX, the only child of Benjamin Thomas Pettit and Maria Anna (Zollner) of Dallas Co., TX. Her father was born in Alabama and her mother was born in Austria.
In 1901 she moved with her parents to Dallas, where she was educated and graduated from Dallas High in 1911.
In 1915 Lena graduated with a BA from the University of Texas in Austin, and taught in Dallas for eight years. In 1923 in Austin she married widower Judge John E. Hickman, son of Nathaniel Franklin Hickman and Mary Jane Forbes(Porterfield) of Liberty Hill, Williamson Co., TX.
They resided in Breckenridge, Stephens Co., TX and by 1935 resided in Austin, Travis Co.,TX, on Park Blvd., behind the Commodore Perry Estate. Lena and John were members of the University Methodist Church for 36 years. After her father's death, Lena's mother, Maria, resided with them in Austin until her death in 1962 at age 98.
Lena was President of the State Official Ladies Club and the Austin Lawyer's Wives Club, among numerous other organizations. She was also a life long member of the UT Ex-Students Association, who in the 1990s, celebrated her as "the oldest living lady Longhorn."
Lena remained active right up until her death at the age of 100. She is buried with Judge Hickman at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, TX.
