Wentworth V. Baker left Maine for California where he enlisted as a private at Volcano October 10, 1861, and was mustered into Company D, 4th California Infantry, October 15. Private Baker was posted to Fort Vancouver, Washington Territory, where he was mustered out October 15, 1864. Wentworth re-enlisted at Fort Vancouver November 1, 1864, and was mustered back into his old company. Private Baker was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco, California, December 19, 1865 (Orton, p. 625). After the war he married Ione (maiden name unknown) in July 1868 and they were living at Haines Slough in Coos County, Oregon, by 1870. By 1875 he was a farmer living at Big Creek south of Empire City in Coos County. Wentworth filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in Coos County July 30, 1890, and received application No. 915,035 and certificate No. 692,849. Wentworth died at Empire May 19, 1912 (Pension File: 1913), and was buried at this cemetery. After his death Ione filed for a Civil War widow's pension in Coos County October 8, 1913, and received application No. 1,015,452 and certificate No. 803,097. After 1930 her certificate No. was changed to XC-2,690,120. (Pension File)
