After 1865, Charles moved to Hagar, Michigan with his uncle Charles Stevens.
He was working as a farm laborer in 1880 in Waterloo, Michigan, eventually moving to Chicago where he met his future wife, Eliza Davis. They were married on Feb. 1 1885 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Chicago.
Charles worked as a ship rigger and eventually a teamster in Chicago before his death in 1918 during the flu epidemic.
He and Eliza were the parents of 10 children, 6 of them dying young.
