A resident of Lenoir City most of her life, she was well known and respected, being called Miss Jane or Lady Jane or Lady Rogers by many. Her and her husband raised their 7 children in Martel, just outside of Lenoir City, where they ran a little country store. Bathing was a Saturday night event with the water heated on the wood burning stove and poured into a tub, starting with the youngest and the girls first. Sunday was for church and visiting family in a neighboring county, traveling on a wagon drawn by the family horse. Mamaw was fierce in protecting her family right down to the great grandkids. She would open the front door of the house on West Broadway and rush out to stop us from getting too near the street. Playing in the back yard was forbidden as the train tracks were close. Tiny but mighty she lived nearly 100 years eating eggs, drinking whole milk, bacon...and didn't like to even take an aspirin for a headache.
