Thomas A. Daly, 98, of Murrysville, died peacefully Sunday, April 25, 2010. Born Oct. 5, 1911, in Hammond, Ind., he was the only child of the late William C. Daly and Helen Shea Daly. Tom was the loving husband of Ruth Eleanor (Hammond) for 65 years prior to her passing in 2001. He is survived by three sons, William (Linnie), Michael (Linda) and Richard; and beloved grandfather of Amber (Nena), Alicia, Brian (Amanda), Caitlin, Ryan and Richard (Michele Boullie). He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Breanna, Courtney, Callista, Aiden and Scarlett; former daughter-in-law, Candace; and 10 nieces and nephews. In addition to Ruth and his parents, he is also rejoined with his grandson, Stephen. Tom had a long and noteworthy career as an executive with Westinghouse Electric. He was granted 13 patents in a variety of areas, including the Mark 37 torpedo, power transformers and the submarine Polaris missile launcher. He concluded his career as corporate director of reliability engineering and product safety. As founder chairman of the Reliability Division of the American Society for Quality Control. He was a prolific writer, lecturer and keynote speaker. During World War II, his efforts in developing the homing torpedo led to citations from the Navy and the Office of Scientific Research and Development for "significant contributions leading to the successful prosecution of the war." A summa cum laude graduate of Purdue University in 1934, he was elected to Eta Kappa Nu, the international honor society for engineers, served as editor of the Purdue Engineer and was a member of the Triangle fraternity. He led a full and active life in retirement, traveling throughout the U.S. and Ireland, boating and fishing on Youghiogheny Lake, swimming and sunning in his pool. He proudly served as a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was a longtime supporter of the Covenant House and Republican Party.
