Birth: Jun. 25, 1914
Etowah County
Alabama, USA
Death: Jan. 26, 1984
Birmingham
Jefferson County
Alabama, USA

Jonnie Belle Chappell's family had moved from Etowah County, AL to the Brownsville, TX area for the years 1911-1913. Jonnie was born on a farm in Coats Bend, Etowah Co., AL shortly after their return from Texas. In 1926 the family moved to the Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL area, about 70 miles from their original homestead. By 1931 they had settled permanently in the East Lake section of Birmingham. Jonnie was of the generation that began the slow process of moving from the farm to the urban areas.

At times her name is seen spelt as "Johnnie". Research has discovered that she had a great-aunt named Johnnie (Chappell) Pollard whom she was probably named after.

Jonnie went to Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, AL but her high school education was interrupted in 1931 by marrying Gresham Talmadge Farrar, the son of a local prominent physician. They eloped and were married on 31 Oct 1931 in Pensacola, FL. Jonnie related of her brief friendship with Margaret LaVelle Fitzpatrick (aka Gail Patrick, actress and executive producer of the long running "Perry Mason" TV series), during her time at Woodlawn High School.

Jonnie's marriage produced one son (1934) and lasted for seven years before ending in divorce. She finished her education by graduating from Massey Business College in Birmingham, AL. The skills she mastered at Massey Business College served her well as she worked as an accountant, stenographer, dental and medical assistants over the years.

She had a great personality, was very beautiful and very loyal. She rejected many offers to re-marry over the years. Her self-written gravestone inscription probably explains this.

Sadly, one of her beloved grandchildren, Debra Leigh "Debbie" Farrar Frueh, died prematurely.

Jonnie Belle (Chappell) Farrar was the 2nd cousin 6 times removed through her father, John Mathis Chappell, of POTUS Thomas Jefferson. (See Find A Grave Memorial #544).
