A CUPP (Combined Unit Pacification Program) squad on patrol near the Phu Tai village complex in Que Son District spotted ten suspected VC carrying sacks of rice approximately 150 meters east of the squad's position. The PF (Vietnamese Popular Force) members engaged the VC with small arms fire who began to flee and the patrol lost visual contact of the enemy.
During the pursuit the squad was hit by enemy fire from nearby huts and was pinned down, during the fire fight that followed two Marines were killed in action and one was wounded. PFC Guelig was one of the casualties; he was killed in action as a result of enemy rifle fire.
