James C. Gentry was born in Indiana about 1837, the son of James and Tanzey (Baker) Gentry. James married Eliza J. Chambers Dec 20 1860.
James and Eliza had two children: Luther (b. abt 1862) and Minerva J. (b. abt 1864)
James was a farmer before he enlisted in the Indiana Infantry in 1865. At that time two of his brother's had already died in the war: John Wesley Gentry 1828 – 1863 and William Burton Gentry 1830 – 1861. Both have tombstones in Burch Cemetery.
James C. survived the war, but there is reason to believe he died sometime between 1870 and 1877.
The 145th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry was organized in Indianapolis, Indiana and mustered in February 16, 1865. The Regiment moved through Tennessee to perform railroad guard duty at Dalton, Marietta and Cuthbert GA. Mustered out January 21, 1866. Company E consisted mostly of men from Monroe County, Indiana.
James C. Gentry is listed on the Company E rolls as a private from Stanford, Indiana.
