|Death: ||Jul. 3, 1890|
John Coburn of Scotish descent, a carpenter & cottage flax farmer in Drumachee Townland, Mullaghbrack Parish, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, married Jane Lockart on Dec. 10, 1840. Three children were born to them in Ireland, Jane, James and William George.
John & Jane moved their family to America, sailing on the vessel "Tuscarora" and arriving Philadelphia, PA April 17, 1851. They settled on the western edge of Philadelphia City in Ward 15, near the Schuylkill River. There they purchased a home by 1860 and here John Jr., Joseph and Wallace were born.
John became an American citizen in 1863 and by 1870 purchased 80 acres of land with house in Phildelphia County Ward 27 at 68th St. and Kingsessing Ave. along Cobb Creek. Here Robert & Samuel were born. John & Jane took in Grandson William, born to oldest son James in Kansas, after James' death in 1873 and raised him to adulthood.
By 1883, with Philadelphia City developing around them, the railroad purchased their property. John moved his family, including Grandson William, to Saline County, Kansas near son William George's farm in Walnut Township, leaving John Jr. & Joseph at rest in Pennsylvania soil. In 1885 he purchased a small farm and also worked as a brick maker.
Wife Jane and daughter Jane died in 1886. The following year youngest son Samuel died suddenly of appendicitis. John died in 1890, survived by sons; William Geo., Wallace, Robert; Grandson William and eight grandchildren of William George & Frances, all in KS.
John rests in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery with wife Jane, daughter Jane, sons James and Samuel. Son William George and wife rest nearby.
