Bessie Carr, 73, retired state hospital cook
Bessie Lea Kelley Carr, 73, of Lewiston, a retired Orofino cook, died Monday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center of complications following surgery.
Carr was a cook at State Hospital North at Orofino from 1963 until she retired in 1984. She also had been a cook at The Fountain at Orofino in 1958 and 1959.
She moved to Lewiston in 1987, after the death of her husband, Clyde Carr, in 1984.
She enjoyed needlework and made jewelry with gemstones she collected herself. She was a member of the Hells Canyon Rock and Gem Club at Lewiston.
She was a member and officer of the women's auxiliary of the Eagles Lodge at Orofino, and a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge and the Women of the Moose since 1961. She also was a past noble grand in the Rebekah Lodge at Orofino and held state offices in the Rebekah Lodge.
She was born Oct. 22, 1917, to Lea F. and Lucinda Powell Kelley at Boles, near Joseph Plains in Idaho County.
She married Carr in August of 1961 at Orofino. A previous marriage ended in divorce.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Sid Carlock of Orofino; a brother, Earl L. Kelley of Madera, Calif.; a sister, Clara Proper of Lewiston; and three grandsons. Two sisters, Minnie Wilson and Eunice Maxfield, preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Orofino Rebekah Lodge Hall. A luncheon will follow. Mountain View Funeral Home, Lewiston, is in charge of arrangements.
