LINCOLN -- The Rev. Richard Atherton, 82, died Sunday (Nov. 24, 2002) in Lincoln. He was born June 17, 1920, at Mineral, Ill., to the Rev. Edgar and Ola (Ader) Atherton. He grew up in several communities in Illinois and graduated from high school in Kankakee, Ill. He received a bachelor's degree from North Western University College in Chicago, Ill., and his master's degree from the Garrett Theological Seminary. He began his ministry at Henepin, Ill., and Newman, Ill., and Jonesville, Minn. He entered the U.S. Air Force and was a Chaplain at Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyo., during the Korean Conflict. On Dec. 31, 1951, he married Colleen Duryea at Reading, Mich. Following his discharge from the service, they moved to Pawnee City where he served churches at Crete, Ord, Blair and Lincoln before moving to Culbertson in June 1975 where he served the Trinity United Methodist Church. They moved to Superior in 1983. Upton retiring, they returned to Culbertson where they operated Atherton's Stained Glass business. He also served the Garden Prairie and Indianola Churches. He was a past member of the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Eugene. Survivors include his wife, Colleen of Lincoln; one daughter, Lynn and husband, David Lux of Lincoln; two sons, Lee Atherton and wife, Rosanne of Tulsa, Okla., and Paul Atherton and wife, Gina of Central, S.C.; one brother, John Atherton of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Edith Atherton of Lovington, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Jean Atherton of California; and seven grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson with the Rev. Dan Spearow and the Rev. David Lux officiating. Interment will be in the Culbertson Cemetery prior to the service. Memorials may be given in his name to the Rev. Richard Atherton Ministerial Scholarship Fund in care of the family or to the church of the donor's choice.
