Son of Irish parents John Jordan (1805-1892) and Eleanor (Ellen) Millen (1807-1870), John Michael Jordan immigrated as a child with his family, first to Haverstraw, NY and eventually to Red Wing, MN. John Jordan enlisted as a private but became a Corporal in Regiment E, Third MN during the Civil War, after which he moved to KS to farm. There he met and married (in 1871, in Olathe) Mary Elizabeth Barnett (1842-1881), daughter of Andrew W. (1819-1977) and Rebecca Jane Burris (1825-1884) Barnett. They farmed in Kansas for a decade before deciding to move their young family [4 children: Franklin B. (1873-1948), Caroline Elisabeth (1875-1967), Leabert E. (1877-1963) and Florence (1880-1904)] to Florida. They moved onto Hog Island, across from Cedar Key, but Mary died of Yellow Fever within a year and John attempted to stay on and raise his children there by working as a blacksmith, house-building, and oystering. A single father with more than a full time job, he allowed friends and neighbors, the Johnsons, to care for his infant Florence; the couple moved to Texas, taking the little girl with them and later to Canada. John moved his remaining family back to Red Wing, to his father's farm; John Sr. died in 1892. In her Memoir, audiotaped when she was 89, Caroline Jordan (Carrie) described her father as always kind and smooth-tempered, industrious and capable, a loving and devoted father. John was visiting his daughter and her family on their farm in Murdock MN when he took very ill and the local doctors advised bringing him to the city for care at St. Barnabas Hospital, the oldest hospital in Minneapolis. He worsened for three weeks and died (of "dropsy," the term then used for edema) in Minneapolis.
