Telemark fylke, Norway
|Death: ||Jun. 7, 1865|
Rasmus Christiansen Holm was born in 1824 in Gjerpen, Telemark, Norway, son of Christian Isaacsen Holm (b. 1792) and Anne Rasmusdatter Berberg (b. 1792). Both parents were born in Holm, Gjerpen. On 9 October 1845 in Gjerpen, Rasmus married Gunild Kirstine Larsdatter Mo (1824-1907). The couple had a daughter the following year, Anne Rasmusdatter Holm, who died in 1849. Their second child, Lars Rasmussen (called Lewis) Holm, born in 1848, was the last of their children to be born in Norway, for in May 1849, the couple emigrated with their small child to the United States, arriving in New York and moving on to Wisconsin. They would have four more children in Wisconsin: Christian Rasmussen Holm (b. 1851), Nels Rasmussen Holm (b. 1855), Anna Kirstine Holm (b. 1860), and Rachel Sophia Holm (b. 1865, the year her father died).
In 1864, the year Rasmus mustered for service as a private in the Wisconsin Volunteers (WI 18th Infantry CO, E - he also served in Co. G, the Neenah Guards), the family had just moved to Strongs Prairie WI and purchased a farm near Arkdale (they had rented farms in other WI townships between 1849 and 1864). Rasmus enlisted for one year but died of disease before the time was out, on June 7, 1865 in the Union hospital in Alexandria VA. This was probably Aspinwall Hall of the Fairfax Seminary, which was used as a Union hospital in Alexandria during the war.
Rasmus' young widow remained on their Wisconsin farm as head of household through the time of the 1900 census. Some of her children and (after 1899) a son in law Christian Hansen helped her to farm it. She died in 1907 there.
