From The Madoc Mercury, March 24, 1865: ACCIDENTAL DEATH "On Monday, the 19th instant, an inquest was held by Charles Gream, Esq., Coroner, and a Jury of 14, on the body of Samuel Badgely, at the deceased's residence on Lot 11 in the 7th Concession of Madoc. It appeared in evidence that deceased left home in the morning for the purpose of chopping some fire wood, and as he did not return, after the dinner horn had been sounded twice, his daughter went after him and found him lying near a tree he had been falling, a branch of which had struck him in the face and forehead, fracturing the skull. He was quite dead when found. The Jury returned a verdict of "accidentally killed."
The deceased and his family have lately come to reside in these parts, having purchased the farm on which they resided. The Jury and those present having been informed that the family were in distressed circumstances, at the suggestion of Dr. Elmer (the surgeon summoned to examine the body) a subscription was set on foot, and $11.60 was collected. Wm Ward, Esq, Deputy Reeve, kindly taking the list, and undertaking to be in the vilage with it on the next morning to see what further sum could be raised.
