Navy vet was family man, outdoorsman

A l v i n Wayne Bartolovich, 75, of Center Township (Barton Hollow), Greene County, died at 7:29 a.m. Friday, September 7, 2012, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., after battling a cancer-related illness since May.

He was born in Center Township, a son of the late John "Shamrock" and Cassie Ruth Breese Bartolovich, and had resided in Greene County all his life.

Mr. Bartolovich was a member of Waynesburg Moose Lodge.

He attended the former Center Township High School in Rogersville.

Mr. Bartolovich was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He enjoyed the time he was able to spend with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and hunting and fishing, as long as his health permitted.

He was employed by the former Williamson Shaft and Slope Co. prior to being employed as a certified electrician, mechanic and welder with the former Central Cambria Drilling of Ebensburg for more than 25 years, prior to retiring in March 2001.

Mr. Bartolovich was a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served as a seaman aboard the U.S.S. Escape. On January 2, 1957, he married Gertrude Ann Moore, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Joseph W. Bartolovich, companion of Linda Miller of Center Township, and James, husband of Cathy Bartolovich of Hickory, N.C.; three daughters, Bertha (Bertie) Bartolovich of Wheeling, W.Va., Tammy, wife of Kevin Whipkey of West Finley, and Cassie Mackey and her fiance, Michael Waites of Burnsville, W.Va.; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Bartolovich, Amanda and Amber Whipkey, Melanie and Justin Bartolovich, Angelica Bartolovich and Steven Mackey; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, William Lewis, husband of Mary Ann Bartolovich of Plainfield, Ind.; two sisters, Wilma Stevens of Lake Wales, Fla., and Helen, wife of Ray King of Waynesburg (Eastview); and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a brother, John Edward Bartolovich.

Friends will be received from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday in Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 11, with Pastor Robert H. Mooney Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery, Center Township. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to one's local American Cancer Society.
