"NEIL, 1490729, William J. B., Pvt., Co. 'H' 142nd Infantry.
"On the morning of Oct. 8, 1918, I saw Pvt. Neil after he had been wounded in the leg. Later in the day I saw him after he had been hit by shrapnel in the face. He had been repeatedly told to go to the rear by his comrades, but refused. Late in the evening, about sun down, he was killed by a high explosive shell. He died instantly. Was buried near St. Etienne, France.
