Woman dies just before reaching 109th birthday - Lizzie Adams lived in three centuries.
The granddaughter of a plantation owner died Wednesday; she would have been 109 years old April 16.
"Man, she was as sharp as a tack," her great-grandson, Scotty Lister, said Friday.
Adams, who outlived six brothers and five sisters, loved to garden and go to church.
"As a matter of fact, she was digging a garden up until she went into a nursing home. She'd been in a nursing home two years," Lister said. "That was mainly what she ate, was everything she planted. She wasn't much on processed food. She ate mostly a lot of vegetables and stuff like that. But she loved fish and chicken."
Adams also was faithful in attending Skinner Temple Church of God in Christ, where she had been a Sunday school teacher and served as treasurer. She also liked to match her wits with anyone.
"She was a real nosey lady," Lister said. "She didn't miss anything. You would think you'd gotten by with something because of her age, but she always knew what was going on."
Burial will be in Post Oak Cemetery in Kilgore.
In addition to her siblings, Adams was preceded in death by her only child, Gertrude Williams, who gave her five grandchildren, who gave her 40 great-grandchildren.
