As a young man in his teens, he "drove the mail" between Sullivan and Cherryfield, and often drove also a four-horse outfit for his half-brother, the late Herbert Cleaves of Sullivan. He later attended McGill University from which he graduated in 1898, and in the same year married the late Nancy (Foster) Cleaves of Bar Harbor. He conducted a veterinary hospital and livery stable in Bar Harbor for many years.

REMOVE ENLARGED KIDNEY FROM CAT - 1935
Removing a kidney ranks among the major operations and when it is successfully performed on an animal as small as a cat it is news. "Old Timer" Jordan, editorial cat of the Ellsworth Daily News, whose hobby is chewing up note paper with important stories on it, is now at home recovering from such an operation which was successfully performed at the Animal Hospital of Dr. Alonzo W. Cleaves at Franklin Roads. An enlarged floating kidney as large as a pullet's egg was taken out. Dr. Cleaves has it now safely pickled as a souvenir of the difficult feat.
