On July 8, 1862, James enlisted as a Corporal in the Union Army, Company I, 121st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. He was wounded on December 13, 1862 during the Battle of Fredericksburg and died from those wounds on January 16, 1863 while a Prisoner of War in Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia.
