Wife of R.A. Aiton & Hugh Malcolm Henry. Daughter of William H. Ellis & Almira L. Shaw.

Funeral services for Dr. Mary Aiton of Summer Hill who passed away Sunday were held at the Congregational church in that place yesterday afternoon at 2:30 pm in charge of Rev. C. L. Belknap. Miss Anna Brant and Mrs. Virgil Dunham sang during the services. Casket bearers were Frank McCartney, Harvey Clark, James Little, John Browning, Asa McCartney and Harry Bolin. Interment was made in the Summer Hill Cemetery. Mary Jane Ellis, daughter of Wm. and Elmira Shaw Ellis was born May 4, 1865, at the H. B. Shaw home, and died at her home in Summer Hill at 3:15 p.m. September 1st, 1935. She was the oldest of a family of eleven children. Educated at Black Oak, Summer Hill and McCune College in Louisiana, Mo., she taught school in Pike county for a number of years. On March 11, 1888 she was united in marriage with Dr. Hugh Henry, and to this union were born two children, Malcolm and Lena. Following Dr. Henry's death on December 8, 1896, Mrs. Henry decided to study medicine and was graduated from the Northwestern University in 1901. Three years later she was married to Dr. R. A. Aiton of Tucson, Ariz., and practiced her profession in that city until 1908 when she returned to her home in Summer Hill, where she has since devoted her life to the care of the sick. Dr. Mary, as she was known through out the county, was unique in many ways and the memory of her unselfish service will linger long in the hearts and minds of those to whom she ministered. In all seasons and at all hours night or day she responded to every call. No case was too bad nor too poor to make her refuse her help. She has been known to unhitch her horse and ride it over the creeks and roads that were impassable for buggies and automobiles in order to render aid to the sick and the dying. She was not only a physician, but nurse and friend as well, and her passing is a great loss to that entire community. Dr. Mary was a member of the Eastern Star and the Woman's Benefit Association. She united with the Congregational Church at Summer Hill, February 23, 1890 and has taken part in all church activities since. Her last appearance in a church affair was when she portrayed the character of Dorothy Ross, in the pageant given in connection with the church centennial last December. The church will miss her help and friendly cooperation. The doctor had been sick more than a year but from sheer force of will kept going. She was unable to leave her bed since March. She spent five weeks in Blessing Hospital, Quincy and since her return home has been considered critically ill. Her daughter Miss Lena with rare courage and skill has cared for her all this time and everything was done to make her last days comfortable. The entire community extends to Miss Lena their sympathy in this hour of her bereavement. Dr. Aiton is survived by one son, Malcolm and the daughter, Miss Lena of Summer Hill, one granddaughter, Miss Mary Virginia Henry, of Pittsfield; two brothers, Howard H. Ellis from Alberta, Canada, Gilbert Ellis of San Jose, Calif., and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Edmonds of Summer Hill, Mrs. Ada Graham and Mrs. Abbie Crois??nt of Depue, Illinois and a number of nephews and nieces.
