He was born on November 14, 1922 in Beloit, Kansas, the son of Andrew O. and Edith Booker Petterson.
He was raised on a farm southeast of Beloit and attended Dist. #87 Rural School. He graduated from Glasco High School in 1941. On November 21, 1941, he entered the US Army Air Corps and was stationed at Harlingen Air Base in Texas during most of World War II. Following his discharge on December 8, 1945, he returned to the Beloit area before rejoining the US Air Force in 1948 and entering the Pilor Training School at Randolph Field, Texas. During the Korean Conflict, he was awarded the Bronze Star. While sering as an instructor at the Advanced Multi-Engine Pilot Training School at Vance A.F.B. in Enid, Okla., an aircraft incident hospitalized him until he was discharged in November 1953. He then lived in Davenport, Iowa, until re-joining the Air Force in 1957. In 1959, he was awarded the Air Force Longevity Service Award with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and in 1960 received the Air Force Commendation Award. He retired from the Air Force in 1967 and moved to Topeka, then to New Strawn in 1972. He operated Andy's Custom Color TV for several years in New Strawn and most recently had been doing clock repair. He was very proud that his Air Force service included duty during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.
He was united in marriage to Gladys B. Kaseman on September 14, 1962, at Chandler, Minn. She died December 5, 1979.
Survivors include: two sons, Mark Andrew Petterson, and wife Debbie, Burlington and Benjamin James "B.J." Petterson, and wife Diana, Lyndon; one daughter Sonia Rae Petterson, Salt Lake City, Utah; three grandchildren, Erin and Bayly Petterson and Kiefer Petterson.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Eloise Beardmore, Maxine Evans and Kathleen Hale.
