Excerpts: The obituary said Samuel died at the home of his grand-daughter Mrs. V. G. Hughes, and he had lived in Sheridan for years. He was born in Warren County, Indiana and crossed the plains with his parents in 1852. The family settled near Oakland, Oregon. It also said he served in the Civil War in the 1st Regiment, Oregon Volunteers. He was survived by his widow and 5 children, Joseph and Ben F. Ensley, Mrs. Cora de Ford, Mrs. Nettie Billmire, and Mrs. Effie Stevens; 25 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. [See the obituary for additional information.]

The 1880 census, the name of the town was not listed, Whitman County, Territory of Washington, page 58C, stamped #379. Date: 15 June 1880, lines 7-17. This shows Samuel as age 35, a farmer, born in Indiana, with a wife named Flitha C., age 29, born in Illinois. They had 6 children: 2 sons, Harmon S. [age 11, born in Oregon], Joseph [age 9, born in Oregon], and 4 daughters, Emma E. [age 7], Nettie J. [age 5], Roanna [age 3], and Mary E. [age 8/12, born in October]. All the daughters were born in Washington Territory.

The 1910 census, 1910 Census, Sam's Valley Precinct, Jackson County, Oregon, E.D. 104. Sheet 12A, stamped #98, dated 17-18-19 May 1910. Lines: 39-42. This census shows Samuel age 66, his wife is now Lydia E., age 64, born in Iowa, and in the same household are two grandsons, Clare and Glynn D. Wallace.

Samuel enlisted in Company A, 1st Cavalry Regiment, Oregon as a private, in the Civil War, on the side of the Union. There is a record that he and his wife, Lydia, applied for his military pension, in October 1890 and in April 1926.
