Birth: Jan. 24, 1800
Cambridgeshire, England
Death: Nov. 21, 1876
Rock Island County
Illinois, USA

Samuel Barnes's tombstone says he DIED in 1876, but he is in the 1880 census, listed in Bowling Township, Rock Island, Illinois. Living with the Joseph & Betsy Gotobed family, Betsy was his daughter. He is shown as Samuel Barens, age 80 born England, father to head of household. So either he was a ghost living with his daughter's family or he died after 1880!!
From the Nebraska bio of his son Samuel Barnes it says about Samuel Senior:They lived in Cleveland,Ohio for six or seven years. Four years later he came to Rockford Illinois, where his wife died, after which he made his home with his daughter in Rock Island county, Illinois, until his death, which occurred when he was nearly eighty-seven years old.
Samuel was the son of William and Mary Roberts Barnes. He married Marianne Goode/Gogue in 1823 in Manea Parish, Cambridgeshire, England.
They arrived in America Dec. 16, 1854 aboard the ship Albert Gallatin, along with their daughter Mary, son Samuel, daughter Betsy & her husband Joseph Gotobed. They settled first in Cleveland, Ohio, where their daughter Mary Barnes married William Price. Both families are in the 1860 census in Cleveland.
In the 1870 census Samuel Barnes is a widower living in Bowling Township, Rock Island county, Illinois with the Gotobed's.
