John, the son of Francis T. Anthony and Evelyn M. Anthony of Port Huron MI, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on February 14, 1966 in Philadelphia PA. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF on September 28, 1966.

On January 7, 1967 while on patrol in near the La Chau village complex in Hieu Duc District, Quang Nam Province a BT (Booby Trap) was tripped, the explosion wounded LCpl Anthony and another Marine. The wound was superficial; he was treated and immediately returned to duty.

On January 31, 1967 during Operation DE SOTO the Battalion CP (Command Post), LSA (Landing Support Activity) and Company L position in Duc Pho providing the security came under simultaneous attacks by the VC utilizing 60 mm mortars, rifle grenades and small arms. The perimeter defense turned back the attack but it was during this contact that (then) Lance Cpl Anthony was wounded for the second time in Vietnam, this time seriously by shrapnel.

He was evacuated first to the 1st MED Battalion in Chu Lai and eventually transferred to the USN Hospital in Great Lakes, IL. He was released from the USN Hospital on July 31, 1968 and eventually retired from active duty due to the nature of his wounds. The cause of Cpl Anthony's death was attributed because of complications to the wounds he sustained in Vietnam.

Cpl Anthony died on February 6, 1989, his name was inscribed on the Vietnam Memorial in May 2006.
