Earnest, the son of Earnest Allen Sr. and Lizzie Allen of Houston TX, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on February 3, 1966 in Houston TX. He arrived in Vietnam on April 8, 1969 and was assigned to Company F, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

After the heavy contact with the NVA on August 25, and the loss of twelve men the Battalion CP (Command Post) set up in a night defensive position was heavily mortared and the sustained many casualties. At first light Company E and F launched their frontal attack and immediately came under intense enemy mortar and RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) fire. With all practical forward movement halted by the extreme heavy fire and casualties mounting the Battalion was ordered to hold its positions, to consolidate, retrieve all their casualties and then to assist the 3d Battalion which was on its way to relieve the battered men of the 2d Battalion. Sgt Allen was one of the casualties, he was killed in action as a result of hostile mortar or rocket fire.
