Edwin, the son of Edwin Blakley Sr. and Earline S. Blakley of Memphis TN enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 3, 1968 in Memphis TN. He arrived in Vietnam on November 28, and was assigned to Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
A patrol west of the Ninh An village complex in Hieu Duc District near the Tuy Loan River tripped an AP (Anti-Personnel) device which caused a SFD (Secondary Firing Device) believed to be a buried 105 mm artillery round to explode. Shrapnel from the explosion killed PFC Blakley and wounded another member of the patrol.
