James was the son of Richard L.Barton and Marjorie Barton, of Grey Bull Wyoming and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 31, 1968 in Omaha Nebraska. Upon completion of Basic and infantry training he arrived in Vietnam on February 29, 1969, where he was assigned to and served with H&S Company, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On April 7, during Operation OKLAHOMA, the 3d Battalion Command Group were displacing their forward (CP) Command Post near Hill 1025 in Dai Loc District. PFC Barton was walking with the point element in advance of the main body when the Marines were hit with several rounds of enemy sniper fire. Pfc Barton was killed as a result of enemy gunshot wounds to his head and body.
