James, the son of Richard L.Barton and Marjorie Barton, of Grey Bull WY, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 31, 1968 in Omaha NE. He arrived in Vietnam on February 29, 1969, and was assigned to H&S Company, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
On April 7, during Operation Oklahoma, the 3d Battalion Command Group were displacing their forward (CP) Command Post near Hill 1025 in Dai Loc District. PFC Barton was walking with the point element when the Marines were hit with several rounds of enemy sniper fire. Pfc Baton was killed as a result of gunshot wounds to his head and body.
