Death: Aug. 12, 1969
Quang Nam, Vietnam

Tilmen, the son of Verges J. Bartholomew and Helen T. Bartholomew of New Orleans LA enlisted in the US Marine Corps on December 4, 1968 in New Orleans LA. He arrived in Vietnam on June 4, 1969 and was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During a search and clear operation in the "Arizona Territory" the 1st Battalion set up a night defensive perimeter with Company B and D on two of three mounds of high ground the Marines called the "Hot Dog" because of the peculiar shape located in the middle of rice paddies northeast of the Phu An village complex in Duc Duc District. Company C, with the Command Group and Company A where two kilometers away. At approximately 04:00 a squad OP (Out Post) from Company D saw movement towards their position and alerted their CO (Commanding Officer), within minutes all hell broke loose as rifle, RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) and mortar fire hit the Marine positions. The OP's were cut off from the main body of Marines and surrounded as NVA troops poured toward the Marines on the high ground. The battle raged throughout the night with Marine artillery preventing the enemy to mass their troops against a single defensive position. With the arrival of dawn the NVA had withdrawn, the night's action proved costly for the Marines, Company B lost eight men killed in action including their Navy Corpsman, Company Ds' losses were six men dead and both units suffered many wounded. PFC Bartholomew was one of the casualties; he was killed in action as a result of hostile rifle fire.
