Thomas, the son of Fred A. Berning and Delores M. Berning of Newport KY, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on February 12, 1969 in Cincinnati OH. He arrived in Vietnam on August 4, and was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
The Company was displacing to a new location near the Thanh Binh village complex in Duy Xuyen District Quang Nam Province, walking point, a Marine suddenly turned and yelled a warning to the men following behind him as an explosion erupted. The large blast killed two Marines and wounded three other men. The enemy mine was believed to have been a 155 mm HE (High Explosive) or 8 inch artillery round, whether triggered by a trip wire or command detonated couldn't be determined. LCpl Berning was one of the casualties; he was killed as a result of multi fragmentation wounds from the hostile explosive device.
