Mrs. T. J. Atchison Very Sick

For about seven weeks Mrs. T. J. Atchison has been sick, for a great part of that time seriously sick. On Friday of last week she took a decided turn for the worse and Dr. Kiene was called from Concordia to consult with Dr. Johnson. On Monday evening and again on Tuesday, Dr. Kiene was summoned. This afternoon the best report we can get from his sick room is that she is holding her own. She is at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Christensen. A trained nurse is caring for her. Her many friends are anxiously awaiting more encouraging news.
April 20, 1927—Kirwin Kansan

Bertha Leona Atchison was born July 4, 1896, the second daughter of Peter and Anna Christensen.

All her life was spent in Kirwin where with her always pleasant smile, her charming voice and her beautiful Christian character, she was beloved by all.

She confessed her faith in Christ her Savior and joined the Congregational Church in 1920. She was also a faithful and helpful member of the Eastern Star, from which order she will be greatly missed.

After many weeks of illness during which all was done that loving hands and skill could do for her, she passed away at her father’s home Friday, April 22, 1927, surrounded by many mourning relatives and friends.

She was married to Thomas J. Atchison November 30, 1921, whom, with father, mother, one brother, Ellis Christensen, and three sisters, Mrs. Arthur Fisher, Mrs. George Perkins, and Miss Opal Christensen, she leaves to mourn her. One brother, Wiley Christensen, preceded Leona in 1904.

The music for the funeral was furnished by the Ladies Octette of which she was a valued member, and the selections were her expressed favorites. The solo, “Resignation”, was sung by Paul Royce by request, and was the last that she sang at any occasion like this. Through it she spoke comfort to sorrowing hearts.

The funeral service was held at the Congregational Church, Ferry Platt having charge of the service. Besides the solo by Paul Royce, the music consisted of three numbers by the Ladies’ Octette, accompanied by Mrs. H. A. Royce. The numbers were: “The Old Rugged Cross”, “Saved By Grace”, and “The City Four-Square”. The service closed with the Eastern Star ceremonial. An exceptionally large body of friends attended the service, showing the esteem in which Leona was held in the community. Many beautiful flowers and floral pieces were further evidence of this esteem. H. P. Landes, Roy Clarke, Hugh Stuckmann, O. C. McMindes, Ray Ewing, and A. E. DesJardins acted as pallbearers. Interment was made in the Kirwin Cemetery.
