Augustus Backus was born in Walton Co., GA, son of James Backus. He grew up in Haralson Co., GA, later settled in Greene Co., GA. Married Mary A. Partee. They had four children: Martha C., Lucinda J., George and Augustus Barto.
Enlisted Aug. 1861, 8th Reg. GA Inf., Co. K (Oglethorpe Rifles). He died of illness in a Richmond, VA hospital.
