Titled: John M. Fackey Services Monday; Noted War Record
Funeral services will be held Monday for John M. Fackey, age 48, 335 South Eleventh street, who died Thursday in Mercy hospital of complications. Brief services will be held at 8:30 a.m. in the Colligan funeral home, 437 South Third street, to be followed at 9 a.m. by requiem high mass in St. Joseph church. Burial will be in the World War 1 Field of Honor, Greenwood cemetery. Services at the grave will be in charge of Frank Durwin post No. 138, American Legion. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday after 4 p.m. These fellow workers, in the Hamilton postoffice, will be active pallbearers: Ralph Weiland, Omar W. Hannah, Claude L. Robinson, Lester Kohler, Carl C. Keller, and Elmer L. Hefler. Honorary pallbearers, representing the American Legion, will be, Howard Warren, Leonard Sparacio, Darrell Wilson, Fred Krahnbuhl, Edward Henes, and George Henninger. John M. Fackey was born in Hamilton on December 5, 1898, a son of John P. Fackey and Catherine "Miller" fackey. He attended St. Mary parochial school, and on the outbreak of the war he enlisted, on February 28, 1917, in the United States marine corps, serving with distinction until his discharge August 13, 1919. Eight Children- On December 2, 1920, he wed Verna Barnegraff who with their eight children survive him. The four sons and four daughters are: Norman, Elmer, John Jr, and Charles Fackey, all of Hamilton; Mrs. J. W. Hill, New Lexington, Ohio, Kathleen Fackey, Mrs. James Brosius and Mrs. Robert Smith, all of Hamilton. He also leaves two grandchildren; his father, and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Jones, Hamilton, and Mrs. Fred Winters, Houston, Texas. He had served continuously as a postal clerk, in Hamilton, since August 20, 1923. Mr. Fackey's record in World War 1 was notable, He took an active part in some of the most bitter fighting of that conflict, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre (French hero medal) for bravery near St. Etienne, France on October 4, 1918. The citation by Marshal Petain, commander of the french forces, told how he had volunteered during a terrible enemy bombardment. He was steadily promoted in the service, to rank of gunnery sergeant. The record shows he took part in battles in the Toulon sector, Eisne defensive, Chateau Thierry, Aisne-Marne offensive, Marbach sector, St. Mihiel offensive, Meuse-Argonne, and then served in the Army of occupation. Mr. Fackey was a member of the Postal Employees association, American Legion, and Forty and Eight voiture. He was a devout Catholic, a member of St. Joseph church and the Married men's society of that congregation.
