Charles Benes, was bank director
Charles J. Benes was a charter member of the board of First Federal Savings Bank when it was organized in 1934 and he remained a director for 56 years. Failing healt forced him to retire March 31, when he was named director emeritus.
Mr. Benes, 85, of Pepper Pike, died of congestive heart failure Monday at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital.
He grew up in the E. 83rd St.-Quincy Ave. neighborhood, where his parents operated the Quincy Theater. He graduated from East Technical High School and attended Dyke School of Business and Western Reserve University, where he majored in accounting.
Before he went to First Federal, Mr. Benes worked for several firms, including the old Guardian Bank. He was the youngest manager at Guardian and was required to grow a mustache to look older.
At First Federal, Mr. Benes served as secretary, loan officer and treasurer. He was also president of the Savings and Loan Institute of Ohio.
Mr. Benes was a member of the Pepper Pike Zoning Board for 13 years and maintained a farm in Orwell, O.
He is survived by a son, Charles J. Jr. of Williamsfield, O.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister.
Services will be private.
