Harlow M. "Bill" Lunney

July 29, 1921 - Nov. 27, 1999

Harlow, 78, died on Saturday, November 27, 1999 at the Hot Springs VA Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in Ord, Nebraska, July 29, 1921 to William Walter and Minnie Elizabeth (Vetter) Lunney.

He attended school in Bosler, Wyoming. After school, he worked at various ranches around Laramie and rode the rodeo circuit. He then came to Newcastle and drove truck for his Uncle M. C. Rich until joining the Marine Corps on June 8, 1943. He was assigned to the 2nd Amphibian Truck (DUKW) Company, and saw action on Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands. He was wounded on Saipan for which he was awarded the Purple Heat. Along with the men of the Fourth Marine Division he was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for actions in the seizure of Saipan and Tinian. He finished his tour with occupational duty in Nagasaki, Japan and was honorable discharged from the Marine Corps on January 27, 1946.

On October 6, 1946, Harlow married Violet M. Mitich at the Methodist Church in Newcastle. To this union four children were born: Esther, Peggy, Lynnda and Bill. During that time, he was employed by M.C. Rich driving truck until moving to Sheridan in 1951. While in Sheridan he worked as a mechanic and attended sheet metal school. In 1955, he returned to Newcastle and worked in sheet metal and the oil fields and retired from the oil field in 1986.

Harlow enjoyed family gatherings, camping, hunting, fishing and sheet metal work.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Vi, daughters Esther Edwards of Mills, Wyoming, Peggy Christie of Four Corners, Lynnda Schroder and one son Bill, both of Newcastle. One sister Marie Pizzichino of Denver and one brother, Gaylord of Los Angeles, thirteen grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, step-mother and one brother.

To his grandkids and extended family he was known at "The Rock".
